The 3rd Annual Edisto Island Salkehatchie Summer Service | July 5–12, 2025

Repairing Homes. Rebuilding Hope.

This July, 80 youth and adult volunteers will come together right here on Edisto Island to make a lasting impact—one home at a time. During this weeklong, faith-based volunteer event, seven local families will receive critical repairs including damaged roofs, unsafe wiring, water damage, and outdated plumbing.

This is more than a mission trip. It’s a grassroots movement of compassion and community, right here in the heart of the Lowcountry.

Building More Than Homes

How Our Youth Grow Through Service on Edisto Island

At Salkehatchie Summer Camp, teens and young adults learn what it means to lead, to serve, and to love through action. This isn’t just community service—it’s character development. Each camper comes away with spiritual depth, confidence with tools, and the pride of helping a neighbor live safer and stronger.

It's faith in work boots, and the transformation is real—on both sides of the hammer.

A River That Sparked a Movement

How a Tragedy in the Lowcountry Became a Statewide Mission of Hope

The name Salkehatchie comes from a river that runs through the South Carolina Lowcountry—winding through the very communities this mission now serves.

But it’s more than a name. In 1978, after a tragic fire destroyed a family’s home, Rev. John Culp launched the first camp with nothing but a few willing hands and a whole lot of heart.

What began in a single town has now helped over 6,000 families across the state. This July, that same legacy flows through Edisto Island.

How Edisto Island Faith Communities Are Fueling the Camp

One Island.
Many Churches.
One Mission.

Throughout the week, campers and volunteers will be housed at Trinity Church. But they won’t be going it alone. Through the Edisto Island Ministerial Alliance, churches across the island are coming together to provide meals, support, and encouragement for all 80 participants.

The Edisto Island Salkehatchie Summer Service Camp is led by the Whitesell family, longtime members of EIUMC. And this year, Nancie’s Clothes Closet is funding many of the meals—so when you shop there, you’re helping build stronger homes across the island.

Salkehatchie is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and local businesses and individuals are invited to give in-kind, financially, or simply through prayer.

We’re grateful for the generous meal support from:

Edisto Island UMC

Edisto Beach Baptist

St. Frederick Catholic

Trinity Church

Allen AME

Redeemer Fellowship

St. Stephen Catholic

...and several kind-hearted private citizens.
